Chord Tip #1: How to create a Diminished 7th from a Major 7th

To create a B diminished 7th chord from an E major 7th chord, do the following:

  • Make an E major 7th chord
  • Move your ring finger dowm one fret
  • Don't play the 1st and 6th string
  • Voila! You now have a diminished 7th chord
  • Note the name of the chord changes because the root is now B and not E

The chord is movable. Move the chord up one fret (middle finger on fret 3, root is C) it becomes a Cdim7.

Move the chord up another two frets (middle finger on the 5th fret, root is now D) it becomes a Ddim7.

E7 to Bdim7
